<--- Click here to go back to Technology Home Getting Great Deals on Hot Cell Phones Like the Motorola RAZR Has Never Been EasierRemember the days when cell phones were about as big as your head and they cost thousands of dollars, plus as much as $5/minute for actually using it? Yeah, it was a nightmare. New cell phones are smaller than your hand, and they can be surprisingly affordable if you are an informed buyer. The first thing you should do before buying a cell phone is consider what you want to use it for. Do you want to take pictures with it? Do you want to be able to go online with it? Do you want a video camera and internet in a phone whose width is less than that of your finger (cough... CDMA RAZR V3c from Motorola ... cough ... so HOT... cough)? There are plenty of options out there. Make sure you select the cell phone with features that are right for you.
We can't pimp your ride, but we can pimp your cell phone! Now the (slightly) tricky part. Price. You're probably used to all your friends just going to the local cell phone provider in the mall. They buy their phone there, sign a bunch of things, and wa-la, they've got a long-term contract with that place in the mall. This is the easy way, but it's also by far the most expensive. If you want the cheapest deals, you almost HAVE to shop online. I'm not talking about some unknown site with Chinese text you can't read. I mean well-known retailers, like Amazon, often sell cell phones for much cheaper than the stores at the mall. In some cases they have huge rebates on the really hot phones. Like with just about any cell phone purchase, you will probably have to sign a service contract in order to get the great deals. This is not as bad as you think. The contracts usually offer the same features as the contract from the mall store, but for less per month. I just don't understand why people still go to the mall and buy $300 cell phones and then pay another $50 or $60 a month for the next 2 years. Go online, get the same cell phone for $100 or even less (sometimes free), and pay $40 or $50 per month for the next 2 years. The only thing the online store is missing is the slick salesman who'll try to sucker you into buying anything. Most online sites will ask you for your zip code, so you can check to make sure the phone you want will get service in your area. You should definately remember to do this before buying a phone. Also ask your friends what service they have, and if it works well in your area. If your friend's Verizon phone from the mall gets great service in your area, the Verizon you buy off the internet will get the same service. |
