Computers are Getting Faster and Smaller, But You Can Buy Them for Less Money than Ever

Computers used to be bulky and slow, then cost thousands of dollars. Things have changed. I will never pay over $1,000 for a computer again. There is no reason to pay that much, even for a laptop. I can get a computer with a processor 3 times faster than the 4-year-old computer I'm using right now, with 4 times as much memory, for a third of the price I paid for mine. You can, too!

In the past I've recommened buying all sorts of things off eBay. Not this time. Computers are one of the few things I would never buy off eBay, even if the seller has a good reputation. Besides, you can find good computers for about the same price on the manufacturer's website. You can also find cheap computers at retailers like Amazon and Half.

Shop Sony VAIO Notebooks direct from Sony for the largest selection of customizable and built-to-order models.

You might not be sure what you need in terms of computer specs. For general use, I recommend 2.5ghz processor or faster, with at least 512mb of ram and a dedicated video card that is at least 64mb. If you want to play newer computer games, I would go with 3.0ghz or faster, with 1gb of ram and a dedicated video card with 128mb or more. You'll probably also want a good audio card, like the Audigy 2.0, for playing computer games.

You will be happy to learn that general use computers (with specs like I listed above) can be found for $800 or less. The gaming computers will be around $1000. Always be on the lookout for big sales and rebates. I've seen rebates for as much as $750 on a $1500 computer.

Make sure to factor in the cost of a monitor when you buy a computer, if you don't already have one. I prefer monitors that are at least 17 inches, and if you don't have a lot of space you should get a LCD (the are only an inch or so thick). LCD prices have gone down considerably in the past year. If you get the LCD packaged with the computer you should be able to get a nice 19" for $300 or less. When packaged with really nice computers the LCD can be much less than $300, sometimes even free.
