Escape From New York DVD Review

In 2003, Escape From New York finally got the Special Edition DVD treatment. It seems a little weird watching this movie today, because the events of the "future" depicted are now very much in the past. We now know that Manhattan was not walled off and turned into a prison in 1991. And the plane crash in Manhattan takes place in 1997 in this movie, as opposed to the 2001 real-life tragedy. For some reason the difference between the future vision and real-life hit me harder when watching Escape From New York than other movies, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey. That said, this was one of the premier action B-movies of the 1980s, and there is plenty of competition in that category. This DVD will help you forget that the movie was originally made for a relatively-low $5 million. Even adjusted for inflation, that's pretty cheap, and there are plenty of special effects that most likely consumed much of the budget.

Look at these incredible prices on Escape From New York DVDs. What's that? You're not an Ebay member! Perhaps it's time to crawl out of that cave and into the 21st century. Register as an Ebay member now. Of course it's free! It boggles my mind when I see people pay retail for items they can get on Ebay for 80% less.

The film transfer is better than the original, and the sound is remixed and also improved. There is also a great commentary featuring director John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Lots of other extras will not be listed here, because I am far too lazy.
