More American Graffiti (1979)

Starring:
Paul Le Mat
Ron Howard
Charles Martin Smith

More American Graffiti is the little-known sequel to the genre-defining classic, American Graffiti. While the original showed us a day in the life of several teenagers in some mid-western town, MAG takes us on a trip across the world throughout the 1960's. Anyone expecting this sequel to be as good as the original hasn't been watching movies very long.

It really isn't fair to compare this movie to the original. The only thing they share is the same characters. The feel of the movie is more remenescent of Forrest Gump or The 60's. It may not be as good as Forrest Gump, but I would say it's on par with The 60's, which is to say that I enjoyed it.

The characters, although one-dimensional, are fun to watch. Almost all of the main characters from the original are back, although some are just surprise cameos intended to catch the viewer off-guard. Look for Falfa (Harrison Ford) as a hippie-hating police officer in San Francisco in 1966. Also look for Little Joe Young (Bo Hopkins), former leader of the Pharoahs, as a soldier serving alongside Toad in Vietnam. John Milner (Paul Le Mat) is back racing cars, this time on the drag racing circuit. His little girl friend (not girlfriend) makes a short appearance, and now she has beatnik boyfriend from New York. I guess she would now be about the same age as most of the kids were in the original.

I liked this movie, if for no other reason than seeing the American Graffiti characters again. If you liked The 60's, which originally aired as a mini-series on ABC and then later as a full movie on VH1, you'll definately enjoy More American Graffiti. This movie is for fans of the 60's, and not necessarily fans of the original.
