Rudy is one of those predictable, sappy, based on a true story
sports movies that I just can't help but like. The underdog fighting
against the odds in this movie is Rudy Ruettiger (Sean Astin),
a no-talent runt with a ton of heart. All he ever wanted to do
was play football for Notre Dame, but his lack of skill, natural
ability, and support from his family stand in his way.
Besides lacking skill on the football field, Rudy isn't the brightest
student either. His grades are so bad that he isn't even allowed
on a trip to visit Notre Dame when he's a senior in high school,
because there was no way he could get accepted there, and he didn't
have any money to pay for it either. His plan is to work in the
steel mill and save some money, with dreams of someday, somehow,
making it to Notre Dame. When his buddy dies in the steel mill
he realizes that he can't wait to act on his dreams. He endures
all the bad luck that the world can throw at him, just for the
opportunity to hopefully get in one play for the Notre Dame Fighting
Irish.
I felt the acting in Rudy was good, but not spectacular.
It was an inspirational movie, but at times it became too sappy.
When compared to similar movies, I'd place this one above Rocky
(which I've always considered to be way overrated, without mentioning
the fairly terrible sequels), but it's not as good as Hoosiers,
Remember the Titans, or The Natural.
