Fighting a DWI or DUI ChargeIf you have been arrested for DWI or DUI it is very important that you contact a qualified lawyer immediately. If you have been retaining a family lawyer you should ask him or her if they have handled DWI cases in the past, or if they can refer you to another lawyer who may be more adept at DWI law. There are a few important things you should remember in case you ever get arrested for a DWI or DUI crime. Do not say more than you have to. A police officer may ask you how many drinks you have had. Tell that officer that you would be glad to coooperate in the present of your lawyer. You will have to submit to a sobriety test. Failure to do so is equivalent to failing a sobriety test in most states. If you are reading this page, you have probably already been arrested for DWI or DUI. I know this because most people do not do any research on crimes they may commit before the crime takes place. It is important not to panic. Stress is not good for you, and awaiting trial can be a very stressful period. Hiring a good lawyer is the first step in eliminating stress. The court-appointed attorney may be free, but you get what you pay for. Public defenders will often handle dozens of cases every day, and they just do not have the time to give their best effort on every case. You will have to shell out quite a bit of money for your own lawyer, but they can end up saving you thousands in fines and will often be able to win your case or at least get the charges lowered substancially. I am not a lawyer, and there are no lawyers in my immediate family. The advice I give is based on my own experience and research I have done. I encourage you to do your own legal research and consult a lawyer with any questions you may have. Choose your situation from the following list:
