Suing a Scam ArtistYou're probably here because you've been scammed. Chances are this scam was perpetrated using the Internet in some way. A growing number of scams are carried out over the Internet, where scammers have many techniques to keep themselves anonymous. Now you want your money back from the scammers. I can tell you right now, this is going to be hard. If you find a lawyer who will give you a free consultation you may want to take that option. In many cases a lawyer will tell you that your case will be more costly than any judgements in your favor, and collecting such a judgement will also likely be a hassle. Scammers like to hide in other countries. If you have fallen for the Nigerian e-mail scam (never give money to someone so they can dump their fortune on you. Sometimes just using common sense can go a long ways towards avoiding being scammed) you will find it very difficult to get your money back. One well-known website, and another popular TV news show, have tracked down Nigerian scammers and exposed them to a national audience. DO NOT TRY THIS! Confronting a Nigerian scammer could result in serious physical injury to yourself. Do not count on the police force being strong enough to provide you protection or go in and capture the scammers themselves. It will take major policy changes before Nigerian scammers will be unable to work freely. You can consult a lawyer if you are the victim of a Nigerian e-mail scam, but you'll probably find better help online, where people can work together to expose these criminals. There are many other types of scams that may have victimized you. Some criminals are stupid enough to operate inside the United States, which has special law enforcement units designated just to investigate these types of crime. Remember that this is the luxury you enjoy for the high taxes you complain so readily about. If your scammer is in the US you should definately consult the proper authorities and a lawyer to guide you through the process of getting your money back. In some cases you may already be protected by credit card insurance and the policies of your local bank. I am not a lawyer, and there are no lawyers in my immediate family. The advice I give is based on my own experience and research I have done. I encourage you to do your own legal research and consult a lawyer with any questions you may have.
